As a young
man going through life in North Dakota, Don spent many hours daydreaming of life
his future, while listening to Neil Young’s "Harvest,” which he describes
as “an almost perfect album.”
Don sentimentalizes
about his life in North Dakota on the track, “Last Call” on his Album, “Out
Here,” which dropped Sept 2013. “Dust on Main so thick you couldn’t see the
cars…All my world, was in this place. It held me tight, holds me still.”
Don’s early
life is the makings of a great country western song. Raised on a farm, the son of an aerial crop
duster and schooling with the same 11 classmates through H.S. Don graduated from
North Dakota State University Don with a degree in Theater Arts and headed
straight for the bright lights of Broadway! While pursuing his acting dream, Don appeared
in 30+ off-Broadway plays as well as soap operas, film and TV commercials.
During the mid 1990’s, Don began to re-think his acting ambitions. He located to
Western Connecticut, returned to school and graduated with a Masters of Fine
Arts in Professional Writing.
A
self-taught musician, with 6 months of jazz guitar training, singing, voice lessons
and now a Masters Degree, Don found himself writing songs, performing in open
mics and picking up local gigs. With his quick wit, mid-west charm and Theater
Arts degree he easily landed the open mic hosting job at the Towne Crier, and
has not slowed down since.
In the world
of Don Lowe, there is no resting on his laurels. He is a freelance writer, a
tutor, a college professor, a singer/songwriter, a performer, and local politician.
This past summer, Don announced his intention to run for First Selectman where
he resides in Sherman, CT. While his opponent won by a mere 80 votes, Don
earned enough votes to land on the Board of Selectman – a three-person board
that governs the town of Sherman. He hopes to bring awareness to Candlewood
Lake, enhance Sherman’s rural character, keep taxes low, and advocate for the
Senior population among other goals while in office for his two-year term that
starts on January 1, 2016.
While some
may think that is enough to keep any single person busy, Don has added one more
project; co-hosting the radio show, Local Heroes on
Pawling Public Radio, 103.7, WPWL with
friend and fellow musician Steve Kirkman. The folks over at Pawling Public Radio knew
what they were doing when inviting Don to co-host the one-hour program, airing LIVE Mondays from 9-10 p.m. An independent musician himself, Don
describes his writing
style as “Americana Kookie, with its roots in traditional country/folk with a
point-of-view and subject matter a little off-kilter.” Don was the perfect
choice to introduce the WPWL’s listeners to the music of independent
singer/songwriters, while delivering an enjoyable hour of songs, stories and the
duo’s special brand of humor.
In addition
to his weekly radio talk show, catch Don on Wednesday nights hosting the Town
Crier Open mic at 7pm in Beacon, NY, or his visit his website for full calendar
