Phil Arnone More Sugar January 2016

From The Orchestra to Metal - Phil Arnone’s Life Ain’t The Pits

Written by Jacque Roche

Eastchester’s Phil Arnone became interested in music around the 3rd grade where he enjoyed playing cello in his local Elementary School’s Orchestra.

At age 13, he found a new love, other than cello. Phil was fascinated for the first time when holding an electric guitar in his hand.  With no knowledge about the instrument and his friend Nick’s quick instruction of a power chord, Phil “took it from there and learned songs he liked by ear.”

Phil’s early musical influences include a Metallica concert, attended when in 8th grade, music by Slipknot & Sepultura, along with the early records by Blink182’s “Enema of the State” and the self entitled, “Godsmack.” The bands and music on NY’s 91.3 FM radio station, K-Rock, was also an early influence.

His music tastes were changed forever when first introduced to a new genre of Metal performed by the band, In Flames. Their powerful, melodic music had an immediate effect on how Phil envisioned his own brand of Metal.  In 2006 Phil began posting original recordings and videos on YouTube.  It became, his “duty to keep posting new videos and guitar riffs for people to enjoy,” Arnone recalls.

A great influence for Phil’s guitar playing and music is Jesper Strömblad, former founder and guitarist of In Flames.  This musician had such an impact that Arnone wrote a song and YouTube music video for Strömblad entitled, “In Jesper We Trust.” Strömblad himself shared this song on his Facebook fan page and personally messaged Arnone with his gratitude for the piece dedicated to him.

Phil met Deadtide’s current vocalist, Mike at Iona Collage in New Rochelle.  With Phil and Mike’s influence Deadtide has become a Melodic Death Metal band with an overwhelmingly unexpected sound. Like a lot Metal, there are elements of punk and alternative in their music, along with some Metal growling-style vocals. Many say Deadtide is the next In Flames, especially when hearing their EP album, “Ephemeral.”  The band is working on a new full-length album that will prove the later.

As of press time, Deadtide is scheduled to perform on Saturday, January 16th at The Freight House, Route 6 Lake Mahopac at 8 pm along with The Apologetics.
